Psalms 36-40

Here's how the study works: Read the chapters mentioned in the heading during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for several chapters creates the opportunity to revisit them and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people's insights.

36:1-2 I have a message from God in my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked: There is no fear of God before their eyes. In their own eyes they flatter themselves too much to detect or hate their sin.

God gives David an insight into the thinking of the wicked. They don’t believe in God, therefore they don’t feel accountable. Furthermore they think too highly of themselves and don’t even realize they are sinful.

37:5-7 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.

David is confident that his vindication would be like the noonday sun – obvious to all. There is no need to fret when people appear to succeed in their wicked schemes. However we do need to be patient.

38:19 Many have become my enemies without cause; those who hate me without reason are numerous.

David was seeking only to do good (v.20) but some didn’t like him. When we do the right thing it causes some to feel convicted about their bad attitude.

39:6 Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be.

Rushing about & heaping up wealth – two things our society does a lot. Why?

Let's not be like those without faith who are often busy without purpose and accumulate wealth for no reason.

40:5 Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare.

God has great, wonderful and numerous things planned for us. Let's thank him in advance for his plans towards us which are always for our good.
