Psalm 1-5

Here's how the study works: Read the chapters mentioned in the heading during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for several chapters creates the opportunity to revisit them and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people's insights.

1:3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.

Christians have a source of refreshment (streams of water) which is more than enough to keep one’s spiritual life fresh and vibrant. The world should see Christians coping well, regardless of their circumstances.

2:4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.

The Lord laughs at those who plot evil. They are so puny! The Lord can wipe them out in a moment. If our trust is in the Lord we have nothing to fear from evil plots.

3:5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.

David can sleep because he trusts in God and knows he will wake up because God sustains him. He is not going to wake up dead! His security is in God. Likewise we can sleep secure in the knowledge that the Lord sustains us.

4:2 How long will you people turn my glory into shame? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods?

People are turning God’s glory into shame by not living the way God intends. People love delusions and look for satisfaction in things, activities, rather than in God. It is easier to believe what’s comfortable rather than what is true.

5:12 Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.

Christians are the righteous because Jesus has made them righteous by his own blood. Therefore we are surrounded with the favour of the Lord like a shield, like something that surrounds and protects us.
