Galatians 5

Here's how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people's insights.

v.25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

So it must be possible to live by the Spirit but be out of step with the Spirit.

Keeping in step with someone means continually checking that you are not getting ahead or behind. Likewise we need to continually check with the Spirit to make sure we are keeping in step with his plans.

For some the danger is falling behind and missing what God is doing. For others (like me!) the danger is trying to get ahead and figure out what God is doing next, instead of being patient and seeing what God is doing now.

v.5 For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.

We wait for righteousness which we gain through the Spirit and not by works. Righteousness is imputed not achieved by our efforts.

v.4 You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

v.18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

We don't have to concern ourselves with the law if we are led by the Spirit. The Spirit will guide us to do what is right.
