Luke 4

Here's how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people's insights.

v.6 And he (the devil) said to him (Jesus), "I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to."

There is a lot of debate about this verse. Was the devil lying or did he have all their authority and splendor? Regardless the devil's power was broken at Calvary and he no longer has the authority and splendor.

Mind you, the devil does a lot of bluffing!

v.22 All spoke well of him...
v.28 All the people in the synagogue were furious...

So furious in fact they were ready to kill him (v.29). How quickly they changed their minds.

Everything can change in a day. Everything can change in one message. They were offended that Jesus took the stories that they knew and used them to teach them something about God that they did not like - His grace and mercy towards Gentiles.

v.42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.

In Nazareth they tried to kill him (v.29) but in Capernaum they tried to keep him. Jesus' response is the same to keep moving on. He was led by the Spirit, not swayed by the people's reaction.
