Romans 15

Here's how the study works: Read the chapter mentioned in the heading several times during the week and share any words, thoughts, verses that stood out to you. Having a week for a chapter creates the opportunity to reread it several times and make additional comments as you feel inclined as well as make comments on other people's insights.

v.24 I plan to do so when I go to Spain.

No one seems to know if Paul ever made it to Spain. I'd like to think he did.

v.16 He gave me the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

We are an offering acceptable to God because we are sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

v.1 We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.

v.2-3 Each of us should please our neighbors for their good...For even Christ did not please himself...

Pleasing ourselves is so ingrained. We assume what pleases us, pleases others, so we barely even realize when we are pleasing ourselves.

v.1-2 (From the Message): “Those of us who are strong and able in the faith need to step in and lend a hand to those who falter, and not just do what is most convenient for us. Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, ‘How can I help?’”

Strength is for service. Those who are strong are to take the initiative and serve others (the weak).

v.10 Again, it says, “Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.”

God always intended to include the Gentiles.

v.20-21 It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation. Rather, as it is written: “Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand.”

Here we have Paul’s personal mission statement. He knew that this was the task that God had given him and presumably confirmed with this Scripture.

v.30 I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.

Prayer is another way of showing love.

Mission is seen as a priestly duty.
